Rib Remodeling
Consultations offered at our three convenient locations in Newport Beach, Upland and Ontario, CA

Rib remodeling is a cosmetic procedure that manipulates the lower “floating” ribs, helping patients achieve a more sculpted hourglass figure. By targeting the 10th, 11th, and 12th ribs, this procedure can reduce waist size by 2-4 inches. Unlike traditional rib removal, this approach avoids completely removing structures and the extensive recovery time. (1) This procedure has become a top choice for those looking to refine their silhouette. It is especially popular among thin patients who feel their torso is naturally square and wish to enhance their waistline without adding excessive volume to their hips or buttocks. Whether the goal is to improve body image, increase self-confidence, or achieve a more defined waist, rib remodeling offers a modern solution for comprehensive body sculpting.

About Rib Remodeling
Many patients desire a more refined waistline, but are hesitant to undergo procedures that manipulate the ribs. Rib remodeling, sometimes called B-Waist or “Barbie Waist” rib repositioning, is a sophisticated alternative to rib removal that achieves dramatic contouring effects by reshaping the ribs instead of extracting them. The minimally invasive procedure targets the lowest ribs in the ribcage. This includes the 11th and 12th ribs, or the “floating ribs,” which only attach to the spine, not the sternum (breastbone). It also addresses the 10th rib, known as a “false rib” for its indirect connection to the sternum. (2) Dr. Ashraf performs each rib remodeling using advanced surgical technology, such as a specialized ultrasonic probe or piezotome device, to manipulate and mold the ribs. This facilitates the necessary structural change to reduce the waist circumference while minimizing damage to surrounding tissues, resulting in less downtime and visible scarring than more invasive procedures.
Benefits
Rib remodeling is beneficial to patients seeking to achieve a pronounced hourglass figure. Key advantages of the procedure include:
- Curvier Waistline: The main benefit is a drastically contoured, well-defined waistline that complements other natural curves.
- Minimally Invasive Technique: By remodeling the ribs rather than removing them, the procedure is less aggressive and avoids the risks and extended recovery time associated with more extensive approaches.
- Minimal Scarring: The procedure only requires small, strategic incisions that blend and fade as they heal.
- Permanent Results: Since the procedure fundamentally alters the contour of the ribcage itself, the results provide a long-term enhancement.
Candidates
Rib remodeling is an excellent option for individuals who are unable to achieve the hourglass figure of their dreams through diet, exercise, or nonsurgical treatments. Potential candidates should be in overall good health and at or near their ideal weight. Patients should have a firm understanding of the permanent nature of the procedure and realistic expectations about surgical outcomes. Candidates also must be non-smokers or willing to quit nicotine for an extended period of time before and after surgery. Dr. Ashraf will finalize your candidacy during your personal consultation.
Personal Consultation
During this in-person meeting, Dr. Ashraf will discuss your aesthetic aspirations, medical history, and current health status to determine if rib remodeling is the right treatment for you. This is the time to ask all of your questions, as Dr. Ashraf prioritizes patient education and will ensure you feel confident and informed before beginning treatment. She will perform a physical exam and review X-rays and/or CT scans. Once she has confirmed your suitability, she will create a personalized treatment plan and provide you with essential pre- and post-operative instructions.

Preparation
Dr. Ashraf will provide you with a set of personalized, comprehensive instructions to help ensure a safe procedure and efficient recovery. Some general guidelines include:
- Temporarily abstaining from alcohol and any blood-thinning medications or supplements.
- Quitting nicotine use at least four weeks before surgery (if applicable).
- Filling all necessary prescriptions in advance.
- Scheduling time off from work and other commitments.
- Arranging personal transportation and assistance for your procedure day.
- Preparing a comfortable recovery space.
Procedure
Dr. Ashraf performs each rib remodeling as an outpatient procedure at one of our fully accredited Panache Plastic Surgery medical offices. The surgery typically lasts around 90 minutes. You will receive general anesthesia to keep you comfortable, and Dr. Ashraf will then use ultrasound guidance to accurately identify and confirm the placement of the 10th, 11th, and 12th ribs on both sides of your ribcage. She uses a specialized ultrasonic instrument to sever the outer cortex of the bone and cartilage without damaging surrounding tissues or muscles. This approach significantly enhances the overall safety and precision of the remodeling process.
Recovery
Recovery from rib remodeling is significantly less extensive than that of a traditional rib removal procedure. Patients typically experience mild discomfort, swelling, and bruising across the treatment area, with downtime lasting one to two weeks. Pain is manageable with prescription medication, and you must wear the compression corset continuously to mitigate swelling and help shape your new waist. You may be able to resume light, routine exercises after the initial rest period, but you must avoid strenuous exercise, bending over, and heavy lifting until Dr. Ashraf gives clearance. Attend all follow-up appointments so she can monitor your progress and address any concerns.
Results
After swelling subsides and the final, healed results become visible, patients consistently achieve a significantly slimmer figure and a smaller, more defined waistline. The procedure enhances the body’s overall curves, often making the hips and buttocks appear more pronounced and shapely in relation to the waist. Since the ribcage restructuring is permanent, you can enjoy your new hourglass figure for life, provided you maintain a healthy weight and lifestyle.
Corresponding Procedures
To achieve the most comprehensive and balanced results, many patients choose to combine rib remodeling with other body contouring treatments, allowing them to address multiple aesthetic concerns in a single session. Popular corresponding procedures include:
- Awake Liposuction: This procedure removes localized, stubborn pockets of exercise-resistant fat, which can further enhance curves and complement the newly defined waist. Dr. Ashraf utilizes an advanced “awake” technique that minimizes downtime and complications, allowing patients to recover more efficiently.
- Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck): The tummy tuck removes excess skin and fat from the abdomen and tightens underlying muscles, often after weight fluctuations or pregnancy. This procedure creates a smoother, flatter, and more defined silhouette that beautifully complements the “snatched” waist of rib remodeling.
- Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL): This dual-benefit procedure transfers fat to enhance buttocks size and shape, contributing to a balanced, harmonious hourglass figure. Patients often undergo this procedure alongside rib remodeling, as it can make the waist look smaller and more shapely. The fat can be removed from the abdomen, thighs, arms, and other stubborn areas to further enhance the sculpt of the body.

FAQ
What’s the difference between rib remodeling and traditional rib removal?
Rib remodeling preserves the lower ribs by reshaping or adjusting their position using advanced technology, whereas traditional rib removal involves surgically extracting the ribs entirely. Remodeling minimizes risks and maintains the protective function of the ribs.
How long will the results of my rib remodeling last?
The results are permanent because the procedure involves structural adjustments to the lower ribcage.
Is rib remodeling safe?
Under the care of a highly experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon like Dr. Ashraf, rib remodeling is a safe and effective procedure.
