A neuromodulator injectable, such as Botox or Dysport, is a botulinum toxin-derived medication that halts acetylcholine release to prevent muscle contraction and reduce wrinkles. The FDA has approved both Botox and Dysport for specific indications, and they can effectively help you achieve a more youthful appearance.

About Botox and Dysport
Botox and Dysport are minimally invasive injectable treatments that restore a more youthful-looking appearance by relaxing the facial muscles. By blocking the transmission of acetylcholine, the neurotransmitter responsible for repeated facial muscle contractions, these injectables can soften and prevent certain wrinkles. (1) Neuromodulator treatments are highly popular, with specialists administering more than 9.48 million injections in the United States alone in 2023. (2)
Benefits
Botox and Dysport provide numerous benefits, including:
- Wrinkle Reduction: Both treatments effectively minimize the appearance of dynamic wrinkles, helping each patient achieve a more youthful-looking appearance.
- Convenient Treatment: Each injection session lasts approximately 15-30 minutes, making it ideal for even the busiest of patients.
- Minimal Downtime: After treatment, most patients can return to their daily activities as long as they take certain precautions.
- Beautiful Results: Our expert injectors enhance your natural appearance while avoiding a “frozen” or unnatural look.
- Lasting Results: The results of both Botox and Dysport can last for up to five months, providing continuous enhancement.
- Preventative Care: We can administer Botox and Dysport to younger patients as a form of ‘pre-juvenation’ to prevent certain fine lines and wrinkles from worsening or forming.
- Increased Confidence: Many patients report an improvement in their self-esteem after seeing and experiencing the results of their treatment.
Candidates

Suitable candidates for Botox or Dysport include most patients interested in softening facial wrinkles. Younger individuals interested in these injectables as a form of “pre-juvenation” may also be suitable candidates. Anyone interested in Botox or Dysport should be in good overall health with realistic expectations regarding their results. We do not recommend Botox or Dysport for pregnant or breastfeeding women or those with certain neuromuscular disorders. (1) However, we still encourage those who do not qualify to schedule a consultation so that our team may find a suitable alternative.
Personal Consultation
The first step to a more youthful-looking appearance is attending a personal consultation at either our Newport Beach or Ontario, California, locations. During your consultation, Dr. Ashraf or another injector will meet with you to discuss your aesthetic goals. They will ask about your medical history, prescriptions, and desired results, then evaluate your face to create an effective treatment plan.
Please contact us online to schedule your consultation. To speak to a member of our team or schedule a consultation over the phone, please call our Newport Beach office at (949) 899-6673 or our Ontario office at (909) 323-1669.
Preparation
Your injector will prepare and provide a set of specific preparation instructions. As Botox and Dysport are minimally invasive and do not require incisions or anesthesia, preparation is fairly minimal. However, you should follow each of the instructions to help ensure optimal results.
Generally speaking, you may need to discontinue using certain medications and supplements, especially those that have blood-thinning properties. You should also avoid using skincare products that could compromise your skin barrier, such as retinoids and/or exfoliants. You must also refrain from consuming alcohol for 24-48 hours before your treatment.
Procedure

On the day of the appointment, patients should arrive with a clean face that is free from any makeup or skincare products. We will first cleanse the skin to remove any dirt, oil, or residue, and in some cases, we will apply a topical anesthetic to enhance comfort. Dr. Ashraf or another injector will then use a fine needle to administer either Dysport or Botox, targeting the specific muscles that cause the formation of wrinkles and creases. These targeted areas may vary depending on each patient’s individual concerns. Many patients choose to address areas such as the forehead, the area between the brows, and crow’s feet. The duration of treatment itself may differ for each patient, but each session lasts approximately 15-30 minutes.
Recovery
Following their appointment, each patient will be free to return to their daily routines. Patients may see common effects such as temporary swelling, tenderness, or redness near the injection sites, but these typically fade quickly. You should avoid touching your face and putting pressure on the treatment area for 24 hours. We also recommend avoiding excessive sun exposure, and although patients can immediately resume their routines, we do recommend avoiding high-intensity exercise or other physically demanding activities.
Results

Botox and Dysport results appear gradually as the product takes effect in the muscles. (3) With Botox, many patients begin to notice improvement within 3-5 days, with full results developing around 10-14 days. Results typically last 3-4 months, though some patients may experience benefits for up to 5 months.
Dysport is often thought to work a bit faster, with visible improvement in as little as 2-3 days, and full results might be seen within 7-10 days. Its effects also generally last 3-4 months. While the treatment is in effect, patients will be able to notice a reduction in wrinkles and smoother skin that leaves them with a more refreshed and youthful-looking appearance.

Some common side effects include mild skin irritation, bruising, and/or swelling at the injection sites. These effects are temporary, and we will explain them in detail during your consultation.
Do Botox or Dysport require any recovery time?

What is the difference between Botox and Dysport?
Botox and Dysport are both neuromodulator injections that use botulinum toxin as their active ingredient.
