Breast Augmentation

Conveniently located to serve the areas of Newport Beach, Upland and Ontario, CA

Breast augmentation is one of the most frequent procedures performed by Dr. Ashraf.

Background

Breast augmentation surgery increases the volume and shape of the breasts. In some cases, the surgery is performed to correct asymmetry (i.e., difference in size or shape between left and right breasts).

Characteristics of the ideal candidate include:

  • Good general health
  • Fully developed breasts
  • Breasts that have lost shape or volume after pregnancy, weight loss, or aging
  • Dissatisfaction that breasts are too small

Process

This is an outpatient procedure that is typically performed using implants. However, breast augmentation using fat transfer is becoming more common. Dr. Ashraf evaluates patient health and individual goals to determine the procedure that will have the best outcome. Each procedure is summarized below.

Implant-Based Augmentation

This is the most common augmentation procedure. The surgery involves meticulous pocket dissection and insertion of breast implants. Dr. Ashraf uses the following types of breast implants:

  • Saline
  • Structured Saline
  • “Gummy Bear”
  • Silicone
  • Round
  • Smooth
  • Textured

Fat Transfer Augmentation

Fat from other areas of the body is retrieved using liposuction and reinjected into the breasts. The breast volume increase from this procedure is quite smaller than with implants. Also, fat injected into the breast may decrease with time. This procedure is ideal for patients who are looking for a subtle increase in breast size.

Recovery

  • Patients should plan to take at least one week off from work or regular routine for recovery. No heavy lifting, swimming, or wearing underwires for at least 6 weeks following surgery
  • Ashraf recommends that her patients wear a post-operative bra without underwires for 6 weeks following surgery.
  • Patients are prescribed pain medications, though most patients are off these medications after 1 week. Scars continue to fade up to 1 year (and sometimes 2 years) after surgery.
  • It is critical for patients with breast implants to continue to monitor their implants and schedule routine follow-ups with Dr. Ashraf.
