A breast lift (mastopexy) is a procedure that removes excess skin from the breasts and lifts their position to help you achieve a curvier, more youthful figure. As you age and the collagen in your skin declines, it is common to experience sagging breasts that affect your body proportions and self-esteem. Weight changes or pregnancy can also affect your breasts and body shape.

About Breast Lifts
Natural aging, weight fluctuations, and breastfeeding can alter the shape of the breasts or affect the size of the areola, or the darker area surrounding the nipple. Breast lift surgery enhances or restores the shape of the breasts. With a breast lift, Dr. Ashraf can also reshape your breasts and can help you achieve a smoother appearance. Although many women undergo a breast lift to restore their figure after pregnancy or weight changes, breast lifts can also be cosmetic. A breast lift can improve your self-esteem and help you feel more comfortable in your clothing and bras. Thousands of women have achieved life-changing results, and you can too. In 2023, specialists performed more than 153,000 breast lifts (1) to help women improve their figures.

Breast Lift Augmentation
Although a breast lift can remove excess skin and reposition your breasts, the procedure cannot increase the size of your breasts. To increase the volume for a curvier appearance, we can combine a breast lift with breast augmentation. Breast augmentation is a procedure that increases the size of your breasts with implants. If you have experienced volume loss from aging, pregnancy, or weight loss, the procedure is effective for helping you restore your figure with a natural appearance. With discreet incisions along the natural curves of your breasts, we can help you achieve your body goals with long-lasting results.
Benefits
Breast lifts offer many benefits to women who would like to improve their figure, balance their proportions, and increase their clothing options including:
- Smoother skin: You can enjoy a smoother appearance with less folds of skin or wrinkles that affect your self-esteem and appearance.
- Improved breast shape: Removing excess skin can reshape the breasts and enhance your overall breast shape.
- Natural appearance: We can reposition the nipple to help you achieve a natural-looking appearance and proportional breasts as well as a more youthful curvy look.
- Increased self-esteem: You can enjoy feeling more comfortable in your body and confident with a curvier figure without droopy breasts.
- Better fitting bras: After lifting the breasts, many women find that their bras fit better and they feel more comfortable in different kinds of clothing.
- Less skin irritation: If excess droopy skin causes skin irritation or rashes, removing it can improve your quality of life. Many women experience challenges with rashes and skin irritation beneath their breasts, and removing the excess skin can help.
- Lasting results: If you take good care of your body and make the lifestyle changes necessary to maintain a stable weight, you can enjoy long-lasting results.
Candidates
If you would like to reduce the size of the areola, and reposition and raise the breasts, you are likely a good candidate for the procedure. If you would also like to correct the appearance of sagging skin or droopiness that affects your figure, a breast lift can help. Suitable candidates are often experiencing:
- Droopy breasts that make it difficult to fit into bras
- Asymmetry that affects the way their clothing fits
- Areolas that point downward due to droopy skin
- Changes to their breasts after weight changes or childbirth
Candidates will need to have realistic expectations about the look they can achieve with the procedure and will need to take good care of their bodies. Maintaining a stable weight will be important for long-lasting results. The best candidates are nonsmokers who support their bodies with healthy meals and exercise.
Personal Consultation
During your consultation, Dr. Ashraf will ask about your aesthetic goals and the look that you would like to achieve. If you have photos of your desired look, please bring them with you for us to discuss. We will also ask about your lifestyle, medical history, and any medications you are taking that could affect your recovery or your results. If you have a condition that makes you unable to receive anesthesia, we will need to discuss the best treatment plan for both your needs and your body goals. It is important to remember that a breast lift will not change the size of your breasts. We can discuss whether or not you will need breast augmentation and the type of implants you will need to achieve your desired look.
Preparation
To prepare for a breast lift, you will need to take the following steps:
- Stop taking blood thinners
- Refrain from smoking
- Ask someone who you trust to drive you home after the procedure
- Schedule at least 2 weeks off work
We also recommend that you run errands, prepare your meals, and pick up any prescriptions you need for your recovery ahead of time so you can focus on healing.
Procedure
During the procedure, we will cleanse your skin and your anesthesiologist will place you under anesthesia. Dr. Ashraf will mark your skin for the procedure and make discrete incisions along the natural curves of your breasts. Following the incision, Dr. Ashraf will reshape and reposition the breast tissue. She will also remove the excess tissue on the breast, tighten your skin, and reposition your nipple. Depending on your body goals and your physical exam during your consultation, there are several types of incisions she can make:
- Crescent: With a thin incision along the top of the nipple she can correct minor sagging skin.
- Donut: By extending the crescent incision along the side of the areola, she can correct moderate sagging and lift more of the breast tissue.
- Lollipop: She can make a lollipop-shaped incision around the circumference of the areola that also extends vertically to the inframammary crease.
- Anchor: She can extend the lollipop incision along the length of the inframammary crease for a more significant breast lift if your breasts are severely droopy. (2)
If you need a breast augmentation to achieve your desired look, Dr. Ashraf can create a pocket in the breast tissue and place the implant behind the muscle (submuscular placement) or in front of it (subfascial placement). (3)
Recovery
After the procedure, you can return home immediately. You will, however, need someone you trust to drive you home. We will also provide specific instructions to help your body heal correctly and to help you care for your incisions. Generally, she recommends her patients do the following:
- Plan to take at least one week off from work or routine for recovery.
- No heavy lifting, swimming, or wearing underwires for at least 6 weeks following surgery.
- Continue to monitor health, and prioritize weekly follow-up appointments 4-6 weeks after surgery. Post-surgical follow-up appointments are critical.
- Take prescribed pain medications as required by the physician. Most patients are off these medications after 1 week.
- Be gentle with the recovery process. Scars continue to fade up to 1 year (and sometimes 2 years) after surgery.
After a few weeks, you can return to your normal routine.
Results
After a breast lift, you can enjoy a smoother, curvier appearance. If you have asymmetrical breasts, the procedure can improve your breast symmetry and balance your proportions. You can also enjoy feeling more comfortable in different types of clothing after the procedure and better-fitting bras by removing excess skin. After achieving their body goals, many women also experience improved self-esteem and enjoy the confidence they feel afterward.

FAQ
Can I have a breast lift if I am planning to become pregnant?
We recommend that you wait to have a breast lift until after you are finished having children because pregnancy and weight fluctuations can stretch the skin and affect your results.
Is a breast lift painful?
We use anesthesia for your comfort during the procedure. However, it is common to experience some discomfort after the procedure while your body heals.
Will I have scars after a breast lift?
You will have discreet scars along the natural folds of your skin that are very easy to conceal. There are several different types of incisions that we can perform to lift the breasts and we can discuss the best type for you during your consultation.
