About Breast Reconstruction
Breast cancer treatment often involves partial or complete removal of one or both breasts, also known as a lumpectomy or mastectomy. Thousands of patients opt for breast reconstruction after breast cancer treatment to reshape their breasts; in 2023, specialists performed more than 157,700 breast reconstructions to help patients enhance their appearance. (2) Breast reconstruction can significantly improve the quality of life for women who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their breasts after surgery. If you have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy, breast reconstruction can improve your confidence and help you feel more comfortable in your body.
With advancements in surgical techniques and technology over the years, women now have more options than ever before when it comes to choosing their breast reconstruction methods. At Panache Plastic Surgery, Dr. Ashraf offers both implant-based and flap-based treatments for reconstructing the breasts.
Benefits
Breast reconstruction procedures offer women numerous advantages. When patients undergo treatment at Panache Plastic Surgery, they typically experience benefits that include:
- Improved breast appearance: Reconstructing the breasts can improve their shape, volume, and symmetry.
- Increased self-esteem: Many women feel more confident in their appearance after breast reconstruction, which can improve their self-esteem.

Candidates
Candidates for breast reconstruction ideally include women who have undergone a mastectomy or lumpectomy due to breast cancer or other health issues. Patients should be in good overall health without any additional medical conditions that may impair healing. Patients should have realistic expectations about their results and understand that the new breast(s) may not look exactly like the patient’s old breast(s). The treated breasts will have a new shape and appearance, and breast sensations may not always be restored. (1) We will also ask that patients who smoke abstain before and after their treatment to optimize their healing. Finally, all prospective patients should consult with their oncologist to confirm that they are suitable candidates for surgery.
Consultation
The first step in your breast reconstruction journey is a personal consultation at Panache Plastic Surgery. During your appointment, Dr. Ashraf will review your medical history, assess your goals, and evaluate your physical condition comprehensively. This assessment will help determine the most suitable type of reconstruction.
Dr. Ashraf will explain the procedure in detail, discuss potential risks, and describe the expected recovery process. She will address any questions or concerns so that you feel well-informed about your options.
Preparation
Once you decide to proceed with breast reconstruction, you will receive detailed preoperative instructions. Following these guidelines carefully will help ensure a smooth surgical experience and optimal results. Avoid blood thinners and certain supplements as instructed. Patients who use nicotine products should quit smoking several weeks before their surgery, as nicotine can impair healing. You will also need to arrange for a caregiver to assist you during your recovery. We recommend preparing a recovery space at home, keeping it comfortable and easily accessible. Finally, please schedule time off from work and social activities to facilitate proper recovery.
Procedure
The specific techniques employed during breast reconstruction can vary based on the chosen method. Breast reconstruction is an inpatient procedure categorized into two types: implant-based and flap-based surgery.
Implant-Based Reconstruction
When using implants for reconstruction, Dr. Ashraf uses saline or silicone implants underneath or on the top of the pectoralis, the main chest muscle, in the place of breast tissue. She will place the implant into the breast while preserving the delicate network of fatty and glandular tissue. Depending on the patient’s anatomy and goals, this can be either a single-stage or two-stage procedure.
Single-stage procedures are less invasive but may require revisional procedures. (3) During a two-stage reconstruction, Dr. Ashraf will place a soft tissue expander into the breast pocket to make room for the implant. In a separate appointment, Dr. Ashraf will place the implants into the newly created pockets. (3)
Flap-Based Reconstruction
Flap surgery is another effective procedure for breast reconstruction. During this procedure, Dr. Ashraf utilizes tissues from one body part to rebuild the breast. She harvests tissue from the abdomen (as well as from other donor areas of the body, such as the back, buttock, or thigh) and uses it to create natural-looking breasts. This option often provides patients with breasts that look and feel more natural when compared to implant-based methods.
Smaller surgeries and revisions may be necessary to reconstruct the breast(s) over time.
Recovery

Depending on whether a patient proceeds with implant-based or flap surgery, they may need to spend several days in the surgeon’s hospital post-operatively. It is important to understand that breast reconstruction takes time. Patients may experience pain or soreness, which you can alleviate with over-the-counter medications. You can also manage any swelling with light walks and cold compresses. Dr. Ashraf may require that patients wear a compression garment or supportive bra during recovery to ensure optimal healing. Patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous activities while healing, typically resuming normal activities within a few weeks. Implant-based breast reconstruction requires approximately 2-4 weeks of recovery and possibly multiple office visits for expansion. Flap surgery recovery averages 4-6 weeks. Regular follow-up appointments will allow Dr. Ashraf to monitor the healing process and address any concerns or complications. Ultimately, results will improve as swelling subsides over the following weeks and months.
Results
After breast reconstruction, patients can expect significant improvements in breast appearance, achieving balanced and natural shapes. Many women find that their reconstructed breasts enhance their confidence, contribute positively to their body image, and improve their quality of life.
Final results can take several months to stabilize as your breasts heal. Overall, breast reconstruction can be a fulfilling step toward physical restoration and emotional recovery following breast surgery to treat breast cancer or other conditions.
Breast Reconstruction With Lift
If you have loose, droopy skin, Dr. Ashraf can remove it with a breast lift (mastopexy). A breast lift removes excess tissue from drooping breasts, repositions the nipples, and tightens muscles to create a stronger muscular foundation. During the procedure, she can also reposition the breasts for a firmer, perkier, more youthful-looking figure.
